Background
"Hey, you! Yeah, you, I'm not talking to myself, am I? What're you doing on Marksman territory?"
"Enough, Lieutenant. Enough! At ease, lad, and put that sword away. Now the dagger, good. And the hammers. And stop your hand creepin' towards that spear. Drop it, lad, if you want to feel those fingers again in one piece!"
"Sorry sir, yes sir!"
"Well done."
You look around the area carefully, then back to several figures in green tabards. Each has a golden border, with crossed golden hammers in the centre. They appear to be some sort of military organisation.
"So, lad. What can I do for ya?"
You look around at a small figure, dressed in thick plates of green armour. He appears to be the military "organisation"'s leader.
"Who are you?" is a sound you hear. You realise that you spoke the words yourself.
"Who are we? We're the Loch Modan Marksmen, the best regiment in all of Khaz Modan! Commander Deroel Thunderbeard at yer service, lad!"
You look carefully at the Dwarf. He has, you notice, a severe limp and only one eye. His beard is in good shape, as is his hair. The green plates of his armour shine in the sunlight around the Loch. A large axe hangs on a strap on his back, next to three clever-looking guns.
You hear your voice say, "Are you... soldiers?"
"Aye, the best ya can find! Want to sign up?"
Without warning, your voice takes control, "Yes. Of course."
"Talk to Lieutenant Sarashi, and he'll sort an interview."
You look apprehensive as you peer towards the person previously called Lieutenant. He wears greying leathers and has several weapons strung around him. Grey hair on his head is noticeable, but also his ability to fade into shadows. He wears a Lieutenant's single gun-shaped pip on his shoulder. He grimaces.
"Och, nay, nay, nay! That's Lieutenant Mantrapper, Garent Mantrapper, and he's the leader of the Mercenary Company, First Platoon, or the Lost Troop (due to his extreme training methods). The Mercenaries, before ye ask, are what we call the other races when they join. Gnomes and Dwarves in the Numbered Companies, everybody else in the Mercenaries. Ye'll find Lieutenant Sarashi in front of Algaz Station, behind us."
You look towards the doors of the Dwarven watchpost. Thick steel in heavy runners bars the entrance to headquarters of the 3rd Khaz Modan Regiment. At a desk, snoozing in the warm air of the loch, is a small Gnome mage with brown hair and a distinctive gun-pip on his shoulder. Next to him is a shadowy figure, similar to Lieutenant Mantrapper. His dark head of hair covers most of his face, the rest hidden under a red mask. Black leather armour hides his body, with many weapons strapped across its surface. He wears no tabard.
The figure nudges the Gnome, which stirs.
"Wazzat?"
"A recruit, Lieutenant. Get it sorted."
The figure returns to sharpening a blade, which seems already sharp enough to pierce most armour. However, he seems unsatisfied and continues to wear at the blade with a fine-quality sharpening stone.
"Ah, right then! I'm Lieutenant Sarashi, and how can I help you?"
"I'm here to sign up," your voice says without thought. "What must I do?"
The recruitment goes on for a short time, as you answer several questions and take an oath. You finally sign a heavy-looking book and are given a tabard. A green shirt is then given to you by a Dwarf, who also tells you that he is Sergeant Major Longbeard, the quartermaster.
After much work from the quartermaster to supply you, other recruits and veterans alike come to greet you. Could this be the beginning of a mighty fellowship? Will you succeed in the Ironforge military? Only time will tell, as you embark on the journey of your life, with the Loch Modan Marksmen!

Military Ranks
Many ranks are present within the military strength of Ironforge. Here are the ranks, listed from the raw recruits to the command staff, through to the uncomplaining military workers.
- Military Worker - you work hard for the regiment, to supply the quartermaster with things to give out. He always needs supplies to feed the troops, clothe the recruits and fill the barrels of our guns. Work hard and you will be rewarded.
- Private - the first military rank of the regiment. You must fight hard in battle and attend regular training to prove your worth to the officers. Remember: hard work leads to promotion, and promotion leads to pay rises from High Command (not that we ever see the money. We all know they seal it back in taxes.)!
- Corporal - the squad's second-in-command! You are an elite trooper within the squad, even the Sergeant will look to you for advice in the heat of battle. Often, you will be given special duties to the regiment.
- Sergeant - the leader of a squad! You control four Privates and a Corporal in battle, and have a direct link to the commander for information in battle zones. You tell the squad what to do, and they will follow your orders. Under the direct command of the Platoon Lieutenant.
- Sergeant Major - You are a special Sergeant, promoted for your skill in battle. You may still lead a squad, but you may be promoted to join the Platoon or even Company Command squads!
- Lieutenant - the commander of a Platoon, consisting of a Platoon Command squad and between two and four infantry squads. You, plus up to three more Lieutenants, are under the direct command of a Captain.
- Captain - Leader of a whole Company! You are in control of the Platoons, consisting of the Squads themselves! You are the one to make it work, to keep your head in battle. You give the orders, you survey the scene, you are under the direct control of the Commander himself.
- Commander - The leader of the entire Regiment. His word is law, and he has the right to punish. Regimental leader. At present, this is Deroel Thunderbeard.
- Major - Not technically a member of the regiment, but an attachment from High Command, the Major is in control of a specific part of the regiment. Current Majors attached to the Regiment are:
- o Major Marov Schwartz - Head of Intelligence.
- o Major Malencius Pyrocog - Head of Discipline.
