Notes from the Iceflow Dig - Day One

From the dig protocol in Narath Stonebrow's notebook:

The Iceflow Lake Dig

Arrival in Dun Morogh several days prior to dig. Located Iceflow Lake site, spoke to fishermen in Brewnall who had found fragment of possibly titanic origin and inspected said fragment. First impression: we have a winner! Obvious carvings of runes not unlike those found in Uldaman and Uldum, yet indecipherable due to the small size of the stone shard. Word seemed to have gotten out due to an indiscretion by one of the fishermen, however. Quickly used what contacts I have in the area to establish a small camp on site and awaited arrival of Boots and assorted diggers who were available on short notice.

The Dig - Day One

Even worse than I had feared: not only had word gotten out but somebody in the League seems to have done their best to sabotage our endeavor. Apparently, printed leaflets had been circulated throughout the Forge announcing the fisherman's find and hinting at our camp, promising free ale for anyone willing to help and the prospect of ice fishing - something we had planned on doing in dig down time but which the influx of people made difficult to say the least.

Made the best out of the situation and got those who could hold their own in the water on for diving duty. Managed to get a rotation going in a more or less orderly fashion and, surprisingly, we had some results to show for after a few hours of diving. Mostly ice-covered rocks, of course, but even those were interesting in some cases.

The Finds:

Stone, smooth to touch, fist size, possible elemental origin:

The initial hint that we might be on to something more came when a digger named Bombist brought up a stone from the lake's bottom that looked normal at first glance yet showed some signs to the trained eye that were intriguing. The rock surface and texture convey a possible titanic origin as part of either a vanquished rock elemental or stone golem!

Crystal core, Deeprock salt-encrusted:

An equal sign of oddity in the lake was the presence of Deeprock salt that was detected by an odd digger couple - one dwarf, one human (!) - who seemed rather competent in their doings despite what looked like constant bickering among each other. The Deeprock salt itself was strange enough in a fresh water lake, but the crystal stone that Snorri Soileater later pried free from the submerged salt crust was even more interesting: it was, by my judgement, an ancient elemental core! Speculation was rampant and we agreed that it might well be a remnant from the period when the titanic vaults were erected.

Added in pencil in the margins: not so sure myself, could be remnants of elemental wars, possible conflict with titanic forces, other causes possible - wouldn't make too much of this, personally, if it wasn't for the stone shard found earlier

Further Investigations:

The divers were tired after their excursions to the lake's bottom and the excitement of discovery. The dig was put on hold, thus, and a break was called during which the fishing lines went flying and a keg of beer was put out.

Meanwhile, Darlonag readied his engineer-constructed diving equipment for a more thorough search of the lake. When our diver was ready, we carefully lowered him into the depths and awaited his return impatiently. I confess to a bit of pacing along the shore, trying to spot Darlonag in the ice cold water, hoping the engineering device would keep him safe. Finally, after what seemed like enough time to enact all seven acts of Alegrunter's "Three Hammer Opera", our diver broke the surface and climbed ashore. What he brought up from the deep, however, did not bode well.

Dark Iron Activity:

Apparently, there had been diggers on site before us. How they had managed to beat us to this we will hopefully find out, because there is no possibility of them simply reacting to rumor. They must have had inside knowledge. This is all the more worrying due to the residue our diver found in the shovel marks and pick traces on the frozen rock: scraps of Dark Iron!

A Wildhammer digger named Reyar shared our suspicion that the Dark Iron clan had an inside source somewhere and that they had probably taken with them the very thing we had come here to look for: further stone fragments that might shed more light on the fishermen's discovery.

The Pact:

In the light of this ill discovery, the dig site was closed down for the moment and the assembled explorers and diggers laid out their plans for the situation. The dwarven digger Bernhold and his human companion Kyte - who had found an aquamarine at the lake's ground, the lucky sod! - seemed to be in it mostly for profit but that's a reason I can understand and work with. We have reached a point where the only people we can trust are the Weary Boots and outsiders - what a sad state the League is in! I will not risk using official League channels to pursue this further. We need to find the source of the Dark Iron's information and take from them what they have seized from the soil of Dun Morogh.

To this end, we have agreed to meet again at the site on the second day of the dig. Everyone will use the contacts at their disposal to make discrete inquiries in the meantime. Personally, I need to speak to Wulfhardt. He's a Boot I can still trust and he might be able to snoop around the League to find the rotten apple.

Let us see what surprises Day Two will bring.
