Review: The second sight on "Magic: The lost Science" by Toomes Steamvent
Dear readers, colleagues, lectors and schollars,
It is not even few hours I have bought, with high expectations, book of renowned scientist on the field of physics, Toomes Steamvent. I have started to read with a large passion for new knowledge and I cannot even describe how was I surprised with the knowledge obtained. A simple-minded comparation of magic to physical science is hitting eyes of a reader trough the first pages, while denying basic teachings about arcane arts. While the author presumes magic a subject to physical laws, he seemingly switches causality. As an arcane flow is deemed a basic materia, pure chaos without form, it can no way be subject to physical laws. On the contrary a mage learned in arcane ways is simply taking out of this materia, imitating the very process of creation of the universe, and is forging substance into form created by his magical formula. As such, the effect of the spell is subject to laws dictated by the formula itself, not the usual physical laws.
A good example is after all mentioned even by author in his book, though blatantly missed by points made. The example of the fire burning oxygen as a fueling for the fire of magical spell might be right, but only to some extent. The spell formula itself is the suply of newly created fuel, making the flame able to burn brightly not only within normal air, but underwater and also in complete void. Such an example leads to conclussion that physical laws included are just a side effect of the creation process of the spell itself.
The author states on last few pages "Those who originally pioneered the Science of the arcane must have held a much greater understanding of physics and the world around us thus allowing them to create such a moderatly simple means of creating these wondrous effects. That level of knowledge is alas lost to us and magic over the centuries devolved into a poorly understood and ritualised mockery of what must have been its former glory."
I can only say that this wondrous knowledge is only lost to the author of the book and his physical steamworks magic utopia.
