Origens:

The Dark Riders were founded by Prince Kael'thas, as an elite military order, under the command of General Etharian Shadowsong. Under his command General Etharian gathered around him, some of the best blood elf soldiers to take care of the difficult tasks asked by Prince Kael'thas. Among these soldiers was his second in command and Brother Tharrion Shadowsong, who was to take care of intelligence and espionage. When the time came for Prince Kael'thas to leave for outlands the Dark Riders was ordered to stay behind and help safeguard the remaining blood elves and the rebuilding of silvermoon. To serve this purpose the Dark Riders was therefore set under the command of the silvermoon council.

When the allegiance with the horde was struck, one of the moves made by the council, to prove that the blood elves were worthy allies, was to change the Dark Riders prime directive into serving the entire horde and thereby show the rest of the alliance what the blood elves were capable of. As well as showing of with military might, the council also wanted to show there willingness to cooperate and one of there moves in this endeavour, was to recruit new members to the order from the other races of the horde.
