How Birds Got Their Feathers

Back a long time ago, back when da spirit world, and da world dat we be seein' today be one, da birds lived up in da mountains but back den they had no feathers so they nevah could come down. They spent all their days lookin down on da rest of da world and being jealous of da tings that got to be lower on da earth.

Back a long time ago when da two worlds be one da loa roamed da land. Dis was before mons come. Dis be when da loa be rulers of all things and were shapin' da world we know today.

Kukul'Kan one day was roamin da land and walkin along a stream. He be happy fo da sun shined down upon him and him be very proud, an very vain, so he often look at hims reflection on the stream and admire how da sun brought out the colours of his feathered headdress and how his jewels glinted in the sun.

Hir'eek, the bat Loa,  be watchin Kukul'kan, an as he is always a trickster, he wonder what he can do to play a trick on da proud Kukul'Kan. Hir'eek decide that it was gonna outsmart da Great Raptor. It take da skin of a Crockolisk an scurry over to da riverbed.

When Kukul'Kan come upon the crocolisk sunning itself hims first paid no mind, but da crocolisk turn to da raptor an begin to talk. "oh great an mighty Kukul'kan I am in awe of being in your presence. It be such an honour to meet da strongest of all tings!" Kukul"kan who be very vain at times smiled and stopped, giving attention to one that gave him so many compliments and says, "Oh small river creature I am glad that yas have reconized mes, I aim to please all dat can see me for what I am."

Da Crokolisk that was really Hir'eek smiled to itself knowing dat his trick would be easy. "Oh mighty rapta", It says, "I would love to see yas show me da powah that you be havin, I am but a humble creature an such tings would be talked of for all me life if yous could show me some of those things." Kukul'Kan nods quite full of himself and happily agrees to give a demonstration of his powah.

"First I hear can eat all tings with little a bother, can yas drink up all da watah in this stream?", asked the Hir'eek disquised Crocolisk. Kukul'Kan nods and leaned over and dislocating his lower jaw in one gulp took in all the water of the stream leaving nothing but a dry river bed. The crocolisk did not yet look impressed. "Hmm well if yas can do that Great Rapta can yas grow as big as that mountain?", asks the crocolisk. Kukul'kan again nods and lets out a deafening roar that swayed da trees an then hims grow to be biggah than a mountain before da very eyes of Hir'eek.

Kukul'Kan laughed and it boomed across the lands. Hims then shrunk back down to a more normal size and smiled at the Crocolisk sure that he must be impressed by now. "Oh", says the Hir'eek disquised crocolisk, "Dat all be very big an show yous have much powah but to impress me you must show me one more ting." Kukul'Kan nodded as he was starting to become bored of the game and began thinking the crocolisk could be a tasty lunch. "What is it then little River creature?" says the Great Rapta. "Well all deese tings be mighty but can one such as yas become small as well? Like a bug?  This would take much powah. Can yas do such a ting?" asked da Crocolisk. Kukul'Kan laughs and nods, clearly thinking this Crocolisk a simpleton for such a silly request. With a snort the Raptor begins shrinking down very small till him be no biggah than da common jungle beetle.

Hir'eek now complete in his trick in a blink of an eye throws off the Crokolisk skin and grabs Kukul'Kan, who is still small in a clawed paw and takes to the air. Hir'eek knew that if Kukul'Kan had no space to grow that hims must stay stuck that small. Now Kukul'Kan saw the trick and new it had been hims pride that had lead him into da trap, but now he saw no way out of it. Hir'eek laughed to itself as it flew up higher and higher into the mountains and to a small cave at the top of da highest one.

In da cave Hir'eek took Kukul'Kan all da way to da back to da darkest part an there in a small crack he stuck in the Great raptah, the crack bein so small an tight that Kukul'Kan could not even move let alone escape or grow big again. Hir'eek laughed an' said, "It be yas pride dat trap yas here Kukul'Kan an now yas stay here an' lose yas place among da Loa because in time yas be forgotten an dere be no escape. Hir'eek flew off giggiling to itself of da good trick dat it played on the other loa.

Kukul'Kan was very angry and roared out his frustration but there be no one to hear it. Well that what hims think but as da sunset and his roars continued da birds that could no' fly since they had no feathers came in from there daily sit upon the mountain cliffs, where they watch all below thems with envy. Many of them come into da cave seeking shelter for da night and readyin' to sleep. These birds they hear da roars and follow da sound to da back of da cave. All da birds quaked an shivered as them was very frightend of da sound. Finally one brave bird came forward an' said, "who be there?". Kukul'Kan happy to hear another told them of his plight. Da birds taking pity asked what they could do to help. Kukul'Kan asked fo water as him was very thirsty. While da birds collected water from a stream in there beaks Kukul'Kan thought hard how to escape. Da birds come back and squeezed their thin beaks into the crack and poured da water in. Kukul'kan drank happily and suddenly had an idea.

"I be knowin' what iwe can do! Come brave bird and peck around this crack with yas beak till it be big enough fo me to climb outta it." says Kukul'Kan. Da birds lined up and took turns pecking at the crack till their beaks hurt. Eventually the hole grew and out came the great Rapta. Kukul'Kan grew to a normal size and smiled at da birds. Birds for yas great service ya have done fo me today I give ya a gift. KuKul'Kan removed a feather from his headdress and stuck it upon the first bird. This was a turquoise feather and suddenly the feathers multiplied over da body of da bird. He removed a red feather and placed it upon da head of another of da birds. Hims did this for every bird in turn dat had helped. Dis be why da birds have feathers. Kukul'kan looked at da birds and smiled. "Now me friends I have given ya these feathers and they will allow yas to fly. Now there be no place you can not go. Da sky be yas kingdom, an no longah just the domain of Hir'eek da bat. Da birds rejoiced an had a great feast in honour of Kukul'Kan an' on da third day they flew him down da mountain in a great flurry of wings and feathers.

Dat be why da birds all have feathers today an' because of his trick Hir'eek must now share it's domain witt da birds as a lesson for what it done. I am not shure if Kukul'Kan learn a lesson about pride from this, but we can only assume he don't take da use of powah so lightly any mo.
